Since its launch, Tord Boontje & Emma Woffenden’s tranSglass has become one of the critically acclaimed products. A part of MoMA New York’s permanent collection, tranSglass is a series of sleek vases, candleholders, carafes and tumblers. The project launched in 2005, bringing together Guatemalan artisans with designers to produce amazing highly polished surfaces in recycled bottles of beer or wine. Focusing on an alternative to the conventional factory-manufactured line and repurposing existing materials, tranSglass is truly a sustainable endeavor. The craft process developed and perfected is called “Cold Glass Handcrafting” by which glass beveled and polished using special diamond tools similar to crystal chandelier and jewelry production. The result is sophisticated, unique, one-of-a-kind pieces that convey a positive attitude toward the environment.
